How to read guitar music?
I recently started playing around on guitar and would like to start learning. I looked up and saw how you can read guitar tabs as music, but if i were to join my schools PIT next year playing guitar, what would the music be shown as, regular music (ex music for piano and clairnet) or tabs? How is guitar music shown?
If you were to join your schools pit orchestra, you will have to learn real notation (Tab is just a lazy way for guitarists to learn songs, really).
It will most likely be shown as chords (ex: C m7/b5 or C maj7 or C sus4) over a staff and maybe some single note lines.
The designated rhythm that you’re supposed to play might be written out in diagonal lines in order for you to accent certain beats. Or you may just have to make up your own rhythm.
You will need to learn some basic chord shapes (major, minor, major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, major 9, major 6, half diminished, diminished, sus).
You’ll also need to learn how to distinguish different keys based upon how many flats or sharps are written in the first bar of the piece.

Following years of fruitless struggle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But… |

Brothers in Arms $5.29 Propelled by Mark Knopfler’s literate songs, gruff vocals, and spidery guitar work, Dire Straits had overcome initial skepticism for their resistance to ’70s new wave accents in favor of a rootsy traditionalism. This 1985 album captures the band consolidating a far more epic style than the concise shuffles and ballads that the original scrappy quartet had reeled off, their ambitions fueled by the … |

Ride the Lightning $13.09 Don’t let that classical-guitar-ish opening to “Fight Fire with Fire” fool you–Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war (“Fight Fire with Fire”), electric-chair execution (the title track), … |
